Vettel keeps third BMW seat for Italy

Sebastian Vettel will again serve as BMW Sauber’s third driver at the next round of the championship in Italy, the team have confirmed. It follows Vettel’s impressive debut performance at last weekend’s Turkish Grand Prix.
Aged just 19, Vettel became the youngest driver to play an official part in a Grand Prix weekend, breaking a record held by New Zealand’s Mike Thackwell for more than 25 years. Not only that, Vettel then went on to set Friday’s fastest time around Istanbul Park.
“We are very happy with Sebastian’s performance,” BMW Motorsport Director Mario Theissen told the team’s official website. “Therefore he will also be our Friday test driver in Monza. However, we will wait until after Monza before we make a decision regarding the last three season races.”
Vettel got his Turkish chance after previous third driver Robert Kubica was promoted to the departed Jacques Villeneuve’s race seat. And with his Monza drive now confirmed, the German teenager has a busy couple of weeks ahead of him.
He is testing for BMW Sauber at Monza this week, alongside Kubica and Nick Heidfeld. He then heads to Zandvoort in Holland on Friday to compete in the next round of the Formula 3 Euroseries. Next week he will be in France for F3 testing at Le Mans until Wednesday, after which he will travel back to Monza.
