Celebrities of various hues flocked into the Indianapolis Motor Speedway during the course of the three-day US Grand Prix. Perhaps the current most popular was Dario Franchitti, whose last appearance here garnered him victory in the prestigious 500 mile race in May.

The 34 year-old Scot, the first of his countrymen since his great hero Jim Clark to achieve the feat, was accompanied by brother Marino, fellow IRL pilot Marco Andretti, and rising ChampCar star Graham Rahal, together with the latter’s manager Rick Gorne, better known as one half of the Reynard ChampCar operation of the Nineties.

Other drivers included F1 ChampCar refugee Robert Doornbos, ex-Formula One star Patrick Tambay, whose son Adrien finished fifth in Saturday’s Formula BMW race, former Tyrrell and Williams F1 pilot turned TV commentator Derek Daly and son Conar, and three-time champion Nelson Piquet.

Denis and Linda Davidson turned up for the first time to see their son Anthony race in the big league after supporting him tirelessly through his karting and F3 years, while from the television world came Frankie Muniz, sometime Formula BMW racer and star of the Malcolm in the Middle TV series. The music business was represented by legendary American producer Pharrell Williams.
